JAECOO J5

2026-10-19 05:30:01

Model Overview

The JAECOO J5 is a compact SUV from Chery's export-focused sub-brand, JAECOO, serving as its second global strategic model following the JAECOO J7. Positioned as a B-segment SUV, it acts as an entry-level offering slotted below the J7 in European markets. In terms of dimensions, the J5 measures 4,380 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. Developed primarily for international markets, the SUV has made its debut or gone on sale in Europe, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia. Powertrain options vary significantly across markets, encompassing petrol, fully electric (EV), and hybrid (HEV) variants. Pricing starts at around €30,000 in Europe, an estimated RM120,000 in Malaysia, and from AUD 36,990 in Australia.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the JAECOO J5 retains the brand's signature rugged aesthetic, earning it comparisons to a "baby Range Rover Evoque" across automotive media. Up front, it features a rectangular waterfall grille with prominent JAECOO lettering flanked by squared-off LED headlamp clusters. The lower front bumper incorporates a full-width air intake paired with standalone circular fog lamps on either side. In profile, clean character lines complement the clamshell bonnet shutlines, featuring conventional pull-type door handles rather than flush units. Blacked-out D-pillars create a floating roof effect, while the rear showcases a full-width tail lamp bar linked by a gloss black trim with JAECOO script, underscored by a chunky black rear bumper cladding. It boasts a ground clearance of 190 mm.

Inside, the JAECOO J5 sports a minimalist, tech-driven cabin. The dashboard is dominated by a 13.2-inch portrait 2K touchscreen infotainment display alongside an 8-inch digital instrument cluster integrated seamlessly into the binnacle rather than sitting proud as a floating unit. Gear selection is handled via a steering column-mounted gear stalk. The raised centre console houses a wireless smartphone charging pad up front and twin cupholders in the middle. The cabin is trimmed in two-tone upholstery with perforated inserts on the seat cushions and backrests. Crowning the cabin is a 1.45-square-metre panoramic glass roof, which JAECOO claims is the largest in its class.

Powertrain and Performance

The JAECOO J5 is offered with market-specific powertrain options, spanning petrol, pure electric, and hybrid setups.

Petrol Variant: Powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 108 kW (approx. 147 PS) and 210 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. Selected markets (such as Russia) also receive a 1.6-litre turbo variant mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with all-wheel drive (AWD). Combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.5 L/100 km under the WLTC cycle.

Electric Variant (J5 EV) : Already launched in Indonesia and Thailand, it is driven by an electric motor rated at 210 PS (154 kW) and 288 Nm of torque, powered by a 60.9 kWh battery pack delivering an NEDC-rated range of around 461 km.

Hybrid Variant (HEV) : Slated for introduction in markets such as Australia, with full technical specifications yet to be announced.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinned by Chery Group's T1X platform—which also serves as the architecture for various OMODA models—the JAECOO J5 features a suspension setup comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension. A multi-link rear setup is a rarity in the B-segment SUV category, noticeably enhancing both handling stability and ride comfort. While standard variants are front-wheel drive, selected petrol versions can be optioned with an all-wheel-drive system on higher trims.

Cabin and Equipment

Configured as a five-seater, the JAECOO J5 offers a standard boot capacity of 480 litres, expanding up to 1,180 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear bench folded flat. Leather upholstery comes standard, alongside a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat. Key creature comforts include dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof with an electric blind, heated and ventilated front seats, a 50W wireless smartphone fast charger, and a hands-free powered tailgate with kick sensor. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with an integrated in-car karaoke function. Audio is delivered via a 6- or 8-speaker setup. Notably, the vehicle is also TÜV-certified for pet-friendly standards.

Safety and ADAS

On the active safety front, the JAECOO J5 is equipped with a Level 2.5 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Key features include Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Centring Assist (LCA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Passive safety is anchored by a high-strength cage body structure complemented by a multi-airbag system.

Market Performance and Reception

Serving as a key pillar in Chery's global expansion, the JAECOO J5 has rolled out across multiple overseas markets, including Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The SUV made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in the second half of 2025, followed by its local preview in Malaysia in August of the same year ahead of an expected launch by year-end. In Indonesia, the J5 EV officially went on sale in November 2025, priced at around RM106,600 to RM127,900 equivalent. Meanwhile, the Australian market is slated for a January 2026 launch with prices starting from AUD 36,990.

In terms of market positioning, the JAECOO J5 directly rivals B-segment SUV contenders such as the Honda HR-V, Toyota Yaris Cross, Proton X50, Perodua Traz, and BYD Atto 2/Atto 3. Armed with sleek styling, an independent multi-link rear suspension, comprehensive tech amenities, and diverse powertrain options, the J5 presents a compelling case in a hotly contested segment. Nonetheless, as an emerging brand, JAECOO continues to face uphill tasks in expanding its dealer network and building mainstream brand awareness.
